Thank you for your interest in Gold Country Lacrosse. My name is Andy Shoop and I am the co-founder and current president of the club. We are entering our third year of existence and play as members of the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association. Our stated goal is, through the game of lacrosse, to have a positive impact on the social development and moral character of Nevada County's youth. Gold Country Lacrosse began as the idea of Janet Konttinen, a mother of a seventh grade player, who wanted her son to be able to continue playing the game after moving from an area where lacrosse was booming. She connected with Andy Shoop, a father and former player, who wanted his sons to have the opportunity to play a game that he loved. The first year, built around a group of 5 boys who had played soccer together, the Stampede was born. The team grew as football players, a hockey star and a handful of all-around athletes joined. Through publicity in the local newspaper, the club added a former NCAA Division 1 player as a coach, a member of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and the mother of a college player, who was a former registrar of a large youth lacrosse program. As new members of the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association, the Stampede played at the junior high developmental level. In the regular season, the team went undefeated against division opponents and advanced to the play-offs. In the first round the Stampede lost a nail-biter in overtime. Building on this success, Gold Country Lacrosse sponsored a summer lacrosse clinic, introducing the game to more youth. The clinic brought together a group of high school aged boys who were the leaders of our Junior Varsity program in 2007. The club grew to include 60+ boys for the 2007 season. These players made up our three teams - two junior high and one junior varsity. Of the 2007 Junior High Teams, the Stampede Black Team took home fourth place in Northern California in their division. The Stampede’s Gold team, went 19 - 1 including 4 amazing overtime victories to capture the NCJLA Championship for their division. For 2008, Gold Country Stampede has more than doubled in size again. We will be fielding a Pups team (grades 5-6), a Junior "A" team (grades 7-8), two Junior Varsity teams (grades 9-11) a Girls High School team and a Boys Varsity team. Lacrosse is the oldest North American sport, originally played by Native Americans, primarily in the northeastern United States and Canada. The game has evolved and is now played at over 400 colleges and 1200 high schools nationwide and is growing every year. Played on a field equivelant to a soccer field, the game combines the ball movement of soccer, set plays of basketball along with the physical aspects of hockey and football. Lacrosse is known as "the fastest game on two feet." Gold Country Lacrosse
